We are privately owned by a small group of employee partners comprising more than 120 years of experience building Power Group into the company it is today and committed to creating a lasting organization driven by the wellbeing of clients and the opportunity, growth and fulfillment of our employees.
How Our Story Started
Power Group was founded in 1983 by Paul Power. Paul was an attorney and well respected life insurance producer specializing in estate planning.
In these early days Power Group was a third party administrator (TPA) for self-funded medical and prescription drug plans, but by 1988 Paul had decided to cease operating as a medical TPA and focus on building a benefits agency. Enter Chip Power, his son and one of our partners today. Chip’s relentless energy, sense of urgency and focus on taking care of the client drove our growth and became our culture.
Fast forward to 2007 and Power Group had become one of the area’s most respected employee benefit firms with a desire to add property and casualty expertise as well. With this in mind, Power Group turned to an old friend and strategic partner, Marty Bicknell, to help fund this new investment in growth. While the initial intent was only to take on an investor, it quickly became clear a complete acquisition of Power Group by the Bicknell family was best for all.
Over the next four years, with the support of the Bicknell family, Power Group more than doubled in size and grew to become one of Kansas City’s strongest full-service insurance firms.
A New Beginning
In 2011 the Bicknell Family’s decision to focus exclusively on growing their financial services business created yet another new and exciting opportunity.
With the Bicknell Family’s support, a small group of Power Group’s longest-tenured employees were able to purchase the agency. This new ownership places ultimate responsibility in the hands of those so long committed to Power Group’s growth and success. Together, they possess a burning commitment and clear vision to create a strong, lasting organization fueled by an extraordinary culture of talented and passionate individuals.

In keeping with our Core Values (Build Strong Values, Commit to Excellence and Live with Gratitude) Power Group employees extend our community by supporting local, non-profit organizations through volunteerism, philanthropy, donations and sharing expertise.
We provide paid volunteer time to all associates and organize company-sponsored events to promote participation. In addition, we encourage individuals to volunteer at schools or nonprofits in their own areas of interest.
Our internal, employee-led charity committee coordinates volunteer efforts that benefit our local communities including activities such as working in food pantries, building affordable homes, and securing toys, coats and school supplies. Some of the company-sponsored things we have done recently include blood drives, food collections and partnering with a children’s center for read-a-thons.
